What to Wear for Professional Headshots

January 5, 2021

In today’s Digital Age, a picture really does say a thousand words and first impressions matter. Whether you are revamping your company website, giving your LinkedIn some TLC, or growing your personal brand, professional headshots are crucial to establishing your “know, like, and trust” factor.

Deciding to book your professional headshot is easy, but deciding what to wear can be another story! You want to appear professional, yet approachable. Exude confidence, but remain relatable. Show who you really are and be taken seriously.

Here are some favorite tips for amazing headshots that you will be proud to flaunt on the internet.

Wear Professional Attire

The first tip for great headshots? Professional attire. Your clothing should be ironed, steamed, not have wrinkles, etc. Accessories are a great way to show off your personality in a professional manner. Avoid branded clothing adorned with logos, writing, and illustrations. Solids are best.  I also prefer sleeves over sleeveless.

You are more than welcome to email or message us some pictures of your attire options before the session for help. Some clients bring several outfits and accessories to the appointment, and ask for assistance in choosing what will photograph best. There is a place to change.

I always like to recommend having at least 2 options. This could be as simple as with & without a jacket. Or 2 completely different things. For example something dark then something pastel. A black blazer and then a denim button up shirt. This really depends on your brand, just know that you can do 2 different outfits & then choose what you like best in the final pictures. As a woman, I like options. Women in general tend to like options in photos of themselves.

Avoid Busy Patterns and Stripes

You want people to notice you, not your outfit. Busy patterns and stripes conflict with backgrounds and draw attention away from the main subject – you! If you are a trendsetter, all the power to you. Embrace your style, but remember to be realistic about how long you would like to use your new photos. Headshots are an investment, and you want to be sure that they are not outdated a year from when you get them.

Flatter your figure

Wear form-flattering clothes. Clothing that is too loose or too tight can make you look heavier than you are. Embrace your figure. We can also smooth any insecurities in Photoshop – not that you need it, because you are fabulous!

Color

Pick a color that flatters your skin tone. Dark colors, blues, and pastels generally photograph the best. One big no-no: stay away from neons. Neon colors can throw off the sensor in digital cameras and do not photograph well. The background at the studio is neutral, and works well with any color, but you want to make sure the colors you choose represent and work well for YOU!

Hair & Makeup

A general rule of thumb, you want to look yourself, but feel your best! Over the years, we have found that clients who take the time and invest in having their hair and makeup done love the impact of their new photos. Ladies, if you plan to hire a makeup artist, be sure to ask for a “natural” look. Hire a pro that will not cake on layers of makeup.

Be Yourself

The best tip for getting the headshots you want? Be yourself! There are guidelines for what photographs best, but above all, you want to show who you are and the brand you represent. This means wearing clothing that you feel comfortable in. Now is not the time to try out a new, unfamiliar style. When in doubt, keep it simple.

What do your photos say about you? Are you ready to craft a first impression that draws clients to you or your business?
